Dry Welsh Steam Coal

I did raise this subject some little while ago but the response was somewhat sparse and not from folks in my area,
(East Anglia). I am also aware that some of the local "brethren" have already arranged a supply of this Dry Welsh Steam Coal bagged and delivered to this area.

We have been buying the same Coal, in bulk bags, ex Barry Docks at a considerable saving even accounting for fuel costs.

I am arranging to procure supplies in bulk for 2010, both for the 7 1/4" gauge railway at lour local Steam Museum and our Launch, so I am asking once again if anyone in the region is interested in taking advantage of sharing transport costs and getting their coal at a good price. The merchants will bag 1/2 ton bags with 25mm or, 25/40mm, (they do bigger sizes if required), all washed and clean. Cost of the last lot back end of last year was £160/ton plus VAT. plus a share of the transport.

E mail if you are interested, we can deliver or off load into/onto your transport with our telehandler.

regards

John Dines

Hello Daniel

We are in Maldon Essex, which is about 145 miles from Loughborough, rather a long way.

Cheers

We have just bought a ton of said same coal from www.the-coalman.co.uk who is not a retailer of the foss-y-fan coal.

The size is maybe a little smaller than i would choose for our use but it probably idea for the size of most launch boilers and £268 gets you a ton palletised into 25kg bags delivered anywhere in the uk mainland.

HI Regarding "the-coalman" site he assures me that his welsh steam coal IS from FFros-y-Fran and is available nation wide on 1000 & 500kg pallets and a good price.

Sorry, a typo there on my behalf in the above post, which should read that thecoalman is NOW at retailer of the foss-y-fann coal rather than is not ...

We've not done about four days steaming on said coal and having spent half of last year burning a mix of chinese anthracite and columbia housecoal its a refreshing improvement!

It does put out a fair bit of smoke when you put fresh coal on but this clears rapidly and it produces good heat and raises steam very effectively. It can clink if you let it, but only with hard and careless firing.

Delivery was excellent, dropped of the tail lift of the lorry within 6ft of the boat.

Yes,

its the stuff ok, very good.
my only gripe was that it was bagged wet & dirty, so makes a mess when bunkering, but burns great with some biggish lumps turning to cauliflowers in the fire.
