History

Purchased in 1999 by Colin Mathieson as a bare hull from Elliot Bay Steam Launch Co., she was brought to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, fitted out to a high standard over the course of several years, and named Waterlily. Waterlily was launched in the summer of 2006. She was then trailered to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where
she regularly steamed on the waters of the Northwest Arm and St. Margaret’s Bay and occasionally, ventured into Halifax harbor, much to the delight of the cruise ship passengers and crews. In 2014, she again crossed Canada to Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. In October of 2023, she was sold to her current owner, who trailered her to her new home in Colorado, USA. Renamed Idris, after a very small, flaming hot, heraldic Welsh dragon from the top left-hand corner of Wales. Idris will be steamed on the lakes and reservoirs of Colorado. The current owner is nearing completion of a water tube boiler and York compound engine, which will be fitted when complete.

Colin and his son steaming in summer 2006 on the Calgary, Alberta, Canada drinking water reservoir. Had permission from the Mayor’s office to do this but halfway through the reservoir manager pulled up in his “power boat” spewing exhaust and a gas slick behind him to tell me Mayor’s permission or not I was polluting drinking water so stop. He was quite interested in how things worked and kindly took this picture.

Live @ 5 (Canadian TV) crew setting up for some intro shots of Waterlily on the Northwest Arm, Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada. They had a great time and the Journalist had Colin steam her and the camera guy around for an hour or so. She just loved it and didn’t want to go back.
